Burgoo (W 4th): Decadent French Onion Soup

We came to Burgoo on W 4th to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were swiftly seated with our reservation and the few spots left were quickly taken up during the lunch hour. I had heard a lot about Burgoo before coming here and they definitely lived up to expectation.

I got a French Onion Soup for the bubbling cheese but was worried that I wouldn't be full with just soup. It turned out that my worries were absolutely unnecessary! The soup is made with roasted onions in a beef broth with croutons soaked in and gruyere, emmenthal and mozzarella cheese on top. The thick layer of baked cheese with each spoonful of hot, flavourful soup combined with the fluffy bread was decadent. This is definitely the best french onion soup I've had.

A friend and I shared the fiesta guacamole which came with crispy white corn tortilla chips. The guacamole had avocado, black bean, pineapple, lime, jalapeno, red onion and cilantro. The pineapple definitely adds a tangy kick that I haven't tasted in other guacamole. Give it a try if you're looking for a starter!

Overall I really enjoyed my meal here. The service was great, the atmosphere was relaxing and the food is packed full of ingredients and flavours that will leave you wanting more!

Coppertank Grill: Spicy Perogy Pizza

Coppertank Grill is in a convenient location near bus stops and good for large groups in a relaxed dining setting. We arrived as a group of 20 later in the evening and was seated promptly. Interestingly, the menus between us had discrepancies. My menu did not have the pulled pork poutine while other menus had the yam fries option. So be sure to check with your friend's menu to fully see what food is offered!

Spicy Perogy Pizza: This pizza was great! It came piping hot with a thin crispy crust, layers of thinly sliced potato, topped with cheese, bacon bits, green onion, and a sizable dollop of sour cream. I really enjoyed it because it was different from the conventional pizza and the cold sour cream with the hot pizza made a great combo.

Overall, the prices are reasonable, the food I tried was good, and they have the space to take large groups.

Romer's Burger Bar: Man's Man Burger

Before going to Romer's I only knew that it was famous for its burgers so I didn't expect the food and restaurant presentation to be as nice as it did. Our server was also excellent and flexible. Now onto the food!

The Best Damn Short Rib Poutine: slow cooked short ribs, gravy, cheese curds, fries
They are not afraid to make big claims on their food at Romer's and I expected nothing less with a dish name like that. Fortunately the poutine didn't disappoint. Although I wouldn't claim it as the best poutine I've ever eaten, it certainly is the best short rib poutine I've eaten. The gravy was not too salty (unlike many poutinerie gravies) and the cheese melted slightly. However, if you prefer the "squeaky" cheese curds of Quebec then the cheese here would be too melted for you.

The Best Damn Short Rib Poutine
The Man's Man Burger "The Best Damn Burger to Ever Hit Your Lips": bacon, cheddar, onion strings, tomato, mustard
Here is another hefty claim by Romer's saying that the Man's Man Burger is the best and I've got to agree. The burger was juicy without getting all over my hands and the onion strings were super crunchy which added an extra texture to the burger. The brioche bun was soft, buttery and slightly sweet. The juice from the meat, tomatoes and mustard sauce mixed together nicely. I would definitely eat this again.

The Man's Man Burger
Magic Mushroom Burger: angus beef, portobello mushrooms, onions, herb garlic Boursin, bay arugula
The Magic Mushroom was good but underwhelming compared to the Man's Man Burger. The mushroom was slightly burnt and personally I didn't prefer the arugula taste.

Overall I had a great time eating here and want to try one of their fish burgers next time!

The Eatery: Spider Roll!

As a restaurant quite close to UBC I've heard about The Eatery many times before and tried it last week! The decor does live up to its hype. It's not photographed very well here because it's quite dark but there are a lot of quirky things hanging off the wall, many of which are Japanese inspired.

The menu is quite extensive with many, many rolls to choose from so if you're indecisive you should probably check out the menu online before heading to the restaurant. I ordered the Spider Roll which has fried soft shell crab in the roll. Overall I liked it but it didn't have the surprising factor like the decor.
