Las Margaritas: Cantina Platter and Fish Tacos

On a weekday evening, Las Margaritas was pretty crowded with diners but we were seated quickly by the hostess.

While waiting for our food, we were given a basket of complimentary tortilla chips with salsa. I liked these chips a lot because they seemed to be freshly fried and the salsa was a good consistency.

Salsa and chips
Cantina Platter: mini chimis, flour chicken flauta, chicken wings, cheese quesadilla, jalapeno peppers, chilima sauce, chipotle dip
This was a shared appetizer platter for two and filled us up well. All the items came hot but started to taste similar after awhile because there was a lot of fried tortilla. I didn't prefer the cheese quesadilla much because it was very plain without dip and the chicken wings were a bit overfried.

Cantina Platter
Fish Tacos: Each taco had two pieces of tortilla holding a piece of fried fish with beans and salad on the side. I really like fish tacos and have ordered them at many restaurants before. This one tasted good but definitely not the best I've had. There wasn't much flavour to the fish.

Overall, it was a solid meal at Las Margaritas albeit not very memorable food.

Chipotle: Steak n' Sour Cream

Chipotle is located in a clear spot in downtown Vancouver near the big Chapters store and just a few minutes walk from the Skytrain station. There was a short line since it was dinner time.

I got the Steak Rice Bowl which was topped with salsa, lettuce, corn, cheese and a very generous amount of sour cream. It came to be $10 with tax just for the rice with no add ons to make it a meal. Can't wait for dining out tax to return to 7% starting tomorrow!

Overall it tasted good but not rave worthy.

On the Border: Supersize!

The Orlando International Airport (MCO) is very large and boasts many food court vendors but we had a few hours before our flight so we stopped by On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. It was lunch time so the restaurant was full with businessmen and families.

After we ordered, our server gave us a bowl of tortilla chips with salsa which tasted really good because the chips seemed freshly made. The chips filled me up about 1/3 so I was surprised at the portion size when our food arrived.

Firstly, the appetizer itself could be an entire meal for two. This is a Border Sampler which includes chicken quesadillas, steak nachos, and chicken flautas.  Sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo and original queso on the side. A sampler is meant to be shared so a larger portion is expected but I didn't expect it to be THIS large!

Border Sampler
Chicken quesadillas: I have no idea if this is authentic Mexican cuisine (probably not) but this tasted so good! The grilled flour tortilla was crunchy, warm, and filled with butter aroma. Inside were chicken pieces, melted cheese, peppers and sauteed onions. Sometimes quesadillas can get soggy toward the end of eating it but these ones remained crunchy (or maybe I just ate them too fast!)

Steak nachos: This has got to be my favourite nachos that I've tried. The same salty tortilla chips from before were baked with cheese and cubed fajita steak pieces. Every bite had cheese, chips and steak. Add sour cream or guacamole to make it even better!

Chicken flautas: Corn tortillas filled with chicken and melted cheese. The outside was crunchy and the chicken was flavourful with curry-like spices.

If you ever go to Borders and can't decide which of their many appetizers to try, I highly recommend the sampler! By the way, everything came hot which makes it more delicious.

After the large appetizer we were already full and the main course portion size is even bigger.
We ordered a Fajita Grill with steak and chicken. It was served with tortillas, Mexican rice, beans, sour cream, pico de galo and guacamole.

The chicken was way over cooked and so was the steak. The vegetables were good though because they soaked up all the meat sauce and juice.

Plentiful sides that come with the Fajita.

Side dishes
Overall, we were happy and full for our flight after this large comfort food meal. I have to remember to order less at American restaurants because their portion sizes are generous.

Mexicali: In & Out

First off I'd like to say this restaurant is a little hard to find or maybe I just have a bad sense of direction cause I walked past the door twice before I realized it was Mexicali. Also this restaurant doesn't feel much like a restaurant, it is more like a cafeteria where you order, eat, and go.

I ordered the $5 combo with two soft (or crunch) shell chicken tacos and a lemon slushy drink (didn't take a picture of it). The chicken is just boiled chicken breast pieces with lettuce and a dollop of salsa and some cheese on top. Honestly there was not much taste to these tacos except for the salsa. However I will say that this is an okay choice for the healthy conscious because the chicken is not fried (lean protein), cheese isn't excessive and the only "bad" part is the all-white flour tortilla shell. The lemon slushy tasted like something I can get from 7-Eleven.

This is my friend's $6 combo beef quesadilla with mexi fries and can of pop. She said it tasted pretty good with plentiful cheese and ground beef inside.
Overall, don't come here for service but a quick affordable fix of Mexican food. I've had better Mexican food that tastes more authentic and if you don't mind Americanized-Mexican food then I would suggest Taco Luis (Oakridge Mall and Lansdowne Mall), it's easier to get to.
