Lin Chinese: Beef Sesame Roll

Eating at Lin Chinese Cuisine and Tea House was an interesting experience because for the first time in my dine out experiences in Vancouver, we were the minority in a Chinese restaurant! As in, we were the only one of two tables of Asians at the restaurant that evening.

With that said, the food was all right and the menu items were more catered toward non-Asian diner's taste.

Rice cakes to me are like Chinese pasta. Each piece is so chewy and soaks up the flavour of the sauce. So of course the sauce makes a big difference on rice cake dishes, this sauce was probably a mixture of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and corn starch.

The Beef Sesame Rolls rolls look like Subway sandwiches in the photo but they're definitely not. The "bun" part is actually a flaky pastry and the inside are cold cut slices of marinated beef and some green onion. I prefer beef rolls with warmed beef inside but this one was still pretty good.

The House Special Fried Rice was a bit on the oily side (for me) but there were actually more ingredients in it than I expected: mixed vegetables, shrimp, chicken.

After dinner, we headed to UBC's Chan Centre for Arts Last Lecture 2013 featuring Michaelle Jean. I was surprised by the number of people who didn't know who she is when I told them I was going to hear her speak. She was Canada's former Governor General and shared her life story from a child in Haiti to moving to Canada and building her career. As a Quebecois, she spoke French at the very beginning and throughout the speech, too even though all the French speakers in the room could also understand English perfectly fine. Well, that's Canadian politics for you.

Well Tea UBC: Gimme Smore's!

Today June 15 is Vancouver Day and also the last day of my summer session! So excited for my summer holidays to actually begin but I met some great people in class. After the final exam and getting trolled by the professor one last time this morning (inside joke) we headed to Well Tea on campus to celebrate.

Well Tea is pretty small and is run like a McDonald's where you order and pay for the food at the counter then you get a device (pictured below) to alert you when your food is ready to pick up. All the utensils and plates are disposable like a food court. There are spaces for approximately 30 people to seat upstairs.

Alert device
I ordered a Smore's thick toast ($4.50) and it was so delicious! The thick toast has butter spread over it, a layer of large marshmellows then baked. The marshmellows were exactly like the ones roasted over bonfires with the outside crispy and the inside gooey. Over the marshmellows is a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup. This thick toast is definitely an indulgence that I would definitely recommend trying!

There is a sign that says no playing cards at Well Tea but nobody stopped us when we played :)

SUB Food: Salad and the Moon

Two lunch choices under $5 at the Student Union Building at UBC.

Salad bar at the SUB food court
I like coming here for a quick healthier lunch alternative. I always get an egg with my salad and the potato salad was actually pretty good. Salad cost is by weight, mine cost $2.95 that day.

Salad bar: greens, potato salad, boiled egg, corn, parm
 The Moon
Chinese fast food vendor in the basement of the SUB. Of course it is not comparable to food vendors at Parker Place but it is quick and the prices are reasonable. I got a single item of Chicken and Vegetable for $3.15. Original price is $3.50 but if you check-in with the Yelp App on your phone you get 10% off your order.
Chicken and Vegetable: water chestnut, chicken meat, celery, zucchini, potato, mini corn, carrots, lots of garlic

The Pit: Waffle Fries!

The Pit at UBC seems to be famous for its waffle fries. I've had waffle fries elsewhere before and these don't taste especially different. However, they are made hot every time which makes it taste better and the portion is good! I dunk my pieces into lots of ketchup.

I've been told NOT to order the Turkey Burger at the Pit because they're not exactly fresh (been the same stock for the year). Not sure if it's true but my friend seemed serious when she warned me so I will just follow her advise as a precaution.
